The Best Places to Visit In Bulgaria This Summer

As the cost of living crisis continues to affect people across the UK, we’re finding that people are still wanting to go on holiday and are prioritizing saving for one instead of other things. Now more than ever then people are looking for value for money from their holiday, so we’re here to tell you about Bulgaria. The Balkans are an area that people are beginning to think about and Bulgaria is driving that, offering ski resorts in the winter and sunny beaches in the summer. This article will be focused on summer holidays, so if you’re looking to learn more about winter holidays in Bulgaria, check out our Bulgaria skiing blog here. In this article, we’re going show you where the best places to go in Bulgaria are this summer based on who you are going with and what you may want from your resort.

How to get there
Bulgaria’s best summer spots sit on its eastern coast looking out at the Black Sea. There are two airports that service this area, Varna is best for the resorts in the north of the country and Bourgas is best for resorts in the south. You can fly to them from 16 UK airports that are Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Edinburgh, London Gatwick, London Luton, Liverpool, Glasgow, Humberside, Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle and Teesside. Most of these flights are to Bourgas so check when enquiring.

Best For Everyone – Sunny Beach
Sunny Beach is the largest beach resort in Bulgaria by far. Located near to Bourgas Airport, the resort has something for everyone with a range of hotels from 3* to 5*, numerous attractions and a wide assortment of hotels offering both local and international cuisine. Many people, especially families, choose to go all-inclusive when they go on a beach holiday. This makes it easy to budget and you know most things are paid for. As well as providing excellent value all-inclusive options, food in Bulgaria is very good value, being able to buy a pizza for £3 or a three course meal for £10 all of which is good quality. The reason for this is that Bulgaria is outside the Eurozone, and its currency, the Lev, isn’t strong meaning you can get more for your money. There is plenty to do in Sunny Beach, with a range of water sports, an 8km beach, two waterparks and a promenade with lots of stalls on it, so you won’t be stuck for things to do. If you’re feeling adventurous, Sunny Beach is nearby many other towns and resorts that you can go to on day trips.

Best For History & Beauty – Sozopol and Nessebar
A summer holiday in Bulgaria doesn’t have to be all modern hotels and waterparks, the towns of Sozopol and Nessebar offer a more traditional atmosphere. Unlike many of the resorts along the Black Sea coast, Sozopol and Nessebar weren’t purpose-built and have been in that location for hundreds of years, with much of the architecture remaining the same. Nessebar dates back over 3000 years and its town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Both have old and new towns. In the old towns, hotels are all small bed and breakfasts where you are encouraged to dine out and experience the local food and ambience. In the new towns are where you will find more modern accommodation, which is usually located on the beachfront. You won’t feel left out if you want to relax on beach during your stay though as both towns have lovely sandy beaches.

Best For Families – Albena
Smaller than the resorts of Sunny Beach and Golden Sands, Albena is best known for its long and wide sandy beach that stretches for miles. The resort has a great range of hotels to choose from and a number of other excellent facilities including a new waterpark that opened recently called Aquamania. It covers over 30 acres and is located next to a large hotel and a casino. It is a peaceful area with none of the nightlife and clubs of Golden Sands which makes it perfect for families. Best For Luxury Holidays – Duni
Many of Bulgaria’s resorts were purpose built to suit beach holidaying tourists and Duni is no different. What does make it different however is that it was built with the high end market in mind as a vacation village rather than beach resort. This still remains to this day and the village’s buildings are surrounded on one side by a pine forested hillside and a 3km long sandy beach on the other. The hotels here are mainly 4 and 5 star and it is the furthest south of the Black Sea resorts away from many of the larger resorts, the nearest is Sozopol.
