Skiing Holiday? Its Time To Think Bulgaria

When it comes to skiing holidays, people tend to be fairly unimaginative and often rule it out as too expensive for themselves unnecessarily. Sometimes you just need to think outside the box and the perfect place for you will emerge. Forget France, Switzerland and Austria we’re here to tell you about Bulgaria. Come with us and throughout this article we’ll tell you more about skiing and Snowsports in Bulgaria so you can see why it could be the choice for you.

How to get there
Getting to Bulgaria during ski season it easier than you might think, with flights from 11 UK airports and with flights arriving daily into Sofia you’ve got plenty of flexibility. You can fly to Bulgaria from Bristol, East Midlands, Manchester, Newcastle, Belfast, Edinburgh, Birmingham, London Gatwick, London Luton, London Stansted and London Heathrow.

The Resorts

Bulgaria has three ski resorts: Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo. Each are well supplied, have a variety of runs and each bring something different when you are deciding what you’re looking for.

Bansko

The biggest ski resort in the entirety of the Balkans, Bansko is a modern ski resort with all the features skiers and borders could want. This includes a fast gondola system which can easily take you to the upper slopes as well as 18 lifts. It is the lowest of the three resorts at only 936m above sea level but has a highest ski run of 2560m. Ski along any of the 75km of marked runs across the resort, the most of any in Bulgaria. Only 2 and a half hours from Sofia airport, Bansko is the most popular choice for families looking to ski in Bulgaria.

Borovets

One of the most popular ski resorts in Bulgaria, Borovets is especially popular with younger visitors because of its excellent apres-ski and lively and varied nightlife. Borovets has 58km of marked runs for you to explore and 12 lifts (a gondola, 4 chair lifts, 9 drag lifts and a carpet lift) to take you up to them. And with only an hour’s transfer time from Sofia airport, it is easy to see why so many people choose to ski at Borovets.

Pamporovo

The quietest resort in Bulgaria, Pamporovo is by no means the worst. It certainly has some beautiful scenery, being surrounded by hectares of forest as far as the eye can see. Pamporovo has the flattest slopes of any resort in Bulgaria making it the best place for beginners who haven’t been skiing before. With 37km of runs there are a variety for everyone including some challenging black runs for more experienced skiers. Pamporovo is the furthest of the three resorts from Sofia airport with a transfer time of 4 hours.

Why Ski in Bulgaria?
We’ve told you more about how to get to Bulgaria and where to ski, now we’re going to show you why you should choose Bulgaria. The most expensive part of skiing isn’t always the flights and accommodation, its usually the extras. Food, lift passes and equipment hire can all add up and make skiing more expensive. Skiing in Bulgaria is excellent value for money, as it is outside the Eurozone, its currency is the Lev which isn’t strong and means you can get more for your money. Apres-ski is excellent, and you can get beer from as little as £1.50 or a pizza from £3. This doesn’t mean sacrificing quality though as facilities are excellent with millions of pounds of investment in recent years to ensure there is a state-of-the-art lift system, floodlit skiing and snow cannons amongst others. Learn to ski passes (including a free lift pass and discounts across the resorts) from as little as £115pp and other discounts and child places mean you’ll get lots for your money. Its no wonder that Bansko, the country’s largest resort, has been nominated as a best value for money ski resort year after year.
