Choose Where To Visit In The Costa Del Sol
The Costa Del Sol is a stretch of coastline in southern Spain going from Malaga in its most northern section all the way down to La Chullera in the south. It is one of Spain’s most popular destinations and given the news that Spain is relaxing COVID 19 rules even further, we thought that it’s the perfect time to showcase this part of the world.
Malaga
The gateway to the Costa Del Sol, Malaga is the airport used to fly into the area and is also the biggest resort. If you’re looking for beaches, Malaga has that in spades with many hotels lining the beachfront for easy access. The Playa de la Malaga and Playa de la Caleta are nearest to the city, being right on its front, a bit further out you should explore Playa de Huelin and Playas del Palo. There is more to Malaga than just sun, sea and sand though. The most well-known tourist attraction in Malaga is the Alcazaba of Malaga, a palace built in the 11th century when the Moors ruled Spain. Its walls and floors are intricately designed, and you can step out into the splendour of the courtyards and gardens both of which are equally stunning. For more of the history of Malaga, you can visit the cathedral, Gibralfaro Castle, the Roman theatre and much more. For art lovers, there is plenty of museums and galleries to get stuck into with the most famous being from the city’s most famous son, Pablo Picasso. Those wanting to experience nature will not be disappointed, from the hiking paths of Caminito del Rey to the Nerja caves and the Montes de Malaga Natural Park, Malaga has what you're looking for.
Benalmadena
About 30 minutes drive from Malaga is the coastal town of Benalmadena. This lively town has a number of beautiful beaches that are quieter than Malaga but still have a good buzz about them and are all easily accessible right from the town. The Puerto Marina district is the hub of the town, full of restaurants, shops and even a sea life centre which is well worth a visit. This is the most tourist-heavy area of the town, so you can either avoid or jump in depending on what you're looking for. If you want to get away and relax, find the Parque de la Paloma. A park in the centre of the town, only 5 mins from the beach, where you can sit amongst some greenery and watch the world go by. Finally, if you want to get a great view of the whole town get the cable car, which you can catch from Calamorro mountain down into the town or vice versa.
Fuengirola
A further 20-minute drive down the coast is Fuengirola, a smaller town than Benalmadena but still bustling with things to do. If you feel as though you missed out on your historical fix in Benalmadena then you should visit Castle Sohail. A 15-minute walk south from the centre of the town, this castle is more than just a ruin, it also holds concerts that you may be able to catch if you’re lucky. What you definitely won’t miss is the stunning view of the town and the surrounding area from the castle’s walls. If you’re feeling peckish just take a walk along the promenade and see which of the many restaurants take your fancy or visit the street market in the centre of town. Alongside its beautiful sandy beaches, another popular tourist attraction is the Bioparc. This naturalistic zoo has a habitat suited toward jungle animals in which they are treated wonderfully.
Marbella
Rivalling Malaga as the most renowned part of the Costa Del Sol, this resort town is well known for its beaches. With 4 beaches right next to the centre, you’re spoilt for choice with which golden sanded spot you choose. The deep blue waters that lap at these beaches have some beautiful wildlife hiding within, with dolphin watching being a favourite activity of visitors. Alongside the stunning beaches is the nightlife and here Marbella exceeds most places in the region, with a wealth of places to choose from, you’ll never be short of a good night out. This destination speaks for itself.
Torremolinos
In between Malaga and Benalmadena, you’ll find the small town of Torremolinos. If you’re looking purely for beaches from your holiday, this is a great place to come. With long beaches stretching the length of the town and its close proximity to the airport it means you can get from the airport and onto the beach in half an hour. There are plenty of shops and choices of restaurants so you won’t have to revisit the same places if you don’t want to.
